For many decades, chairs have evolved, and new chairs have been designed by famous designers in different furniture design eras.

Wishbone chair was the most iconic design in Mid tweentith century, and its mass production still dominate furniture market with upscale owners.

In the year 1949,  "Hans J. Wegner, "a Danish furniture designer, manufactured the Wishbone dining chair for Denmark's finest furniture manufacturer, Carl Hansen and Son.

Wishbone has other popular names like CH24 or Y-shape chairs. Carl Hansen and Son started manufacturing them in 1950 during "Danish mid-century modern furniture design", and still in 2026, they are popular and manufactured in huge quantities.

Backrest 

Wishbones are also called Y-shape chairs, the reason being they have a Y-shape backrest support with Steam-bent solid wood top rail to ensure balanced back support.

Framework

 The wishbone chair Wooden frame is attached through the mortise and tenon joinery method for high strength and less weight.

Armrest

Wishbone has curved arms molded by the steam-bent top rail method for support and comfort.

Legs

 The Wishbone offers tapered legs joint through stretchers, for sound stability and a better view.

Wishbone-Chairs Manufacturing Process 

Kiln-dried Wood 

The Process of artificially drying Hardwoods in industrial chambers to reduce moisture. It makes wood durable and sturdy for a long time, preventing wood from shrinking and protecting it against pests.

Steam-bend 

Steam bend process aids in shaping the armrest for the wishbone. First, the top rail is steamed to make the wood elastic, and then it is bent to make curve shape. In the final step, bent wood is clamped to make curved and left to dry.

Shape

Different wooden parts of Y chair legs, backrest and armrest are cut precisely into different shapes through CNC or handcrafted techniques, then they are assembled using a drill to achieve perfect dimensions.

Sanding Process

Wooden parts are sanded with sandpaper for a smooth finish. Wooden edges are also rounded.

Assembling Process

The wishbone frame is assembled by a combination of  Mortise and tenon joints and adhesive for a strong structure. 

Finishing process : 

Finishing is a post-sanding process in which a protective layer of liquid finish is applied to wood to resist moisture, stains,  wear and tear. There are multiple finishes available for the finishing Process. The most popular ones are water-based lacquer and PU coating.

Seat : 

CH24 Chair seat is woven by hand with rope. The most popular weaving pattern used for wishbone chairs is the envelope weave pattern.
