Once while on a vacation with my husband in Sri Lanka, we stayed in a hotel in the beautiful town Kandy. The mesmerising interiors of the room consisted of a hand carved wooden four poster bed and I couldn’t take my eyes off it. I loved the design so much that I knew it would be engraved in my memory forever. When we came home I was determined to replace my regular bed with a simple and sophisticated four poster design, not as elaborate as the one in the hotel but I wanted something that looked elegant and could make my otherwise plain room look really classy. I finally found one at Kernig Krafts, a dark stained, teak wood bed that I adore.
My favourite is the contemporary dark stained wooden four poster bed.
There is something intriguing about a four poster bed, it has a quiet mystery about it, doesn’t it? There is a lot of buzz regarding interior trends like mother of pearl and bone inlay, rattan and resin. I am often asked if a four poster bed is in or not. My answer always is- it’s a classic! It never went out of fashion. Like chesterfields, four poster beds just need the right design and space and they shine. If you are also enamoured of four poster beds but don’t know if you should get one, I am here to help. Read on to find more about them.
For a small room light colors are your best bet.
Small bedrooms : The people who often shy away from these majestic pieces are the ones with small bedroom spaces and to an extent I agree with them. If your room is extremely small then it’s best to not get a four poster bed because it definitely consumes more space than a regular bed. But, if you have a medium or large sized room then you can definitely go for it. If you are determined to fit in a four poster in your small sized room then opt for a simple design. Heavy carving and thick pillars would add unwanted heaviness to the room. Also, go for light tones like white or natural stains on wood. Light colors will make it feel airy and not stuffy. Make sure that your bed is the hero of your room. Do not clutter the space with unnecessary furniture, only keep what is required to keep the look clean. A matching nightstand and light textured curtains are all you need to keep the room looking fresh. Another great idea is to get a metal four poster bed. A metal four poster bed can be really minimal as they can be sleeker as compared to wood ones.
Wood vs Metal : This decision should be solely based on the decoration style of your room. Both metal and wooden four poster beds can be as simple or as intricate as you want. Metal beds are more long lasting as compared to wood ones so if you are one of those people who do not like to update their interiors frequently then a metal four poster is the ideal choice for you. Traditional and classic themes can go for carved wooden beds, the stain could be dark or light depending on the rest of your furniture. Classic decoration styles usually use dark stains that have red or brown tones. A simple way to tie it all together is to use the same stain on your chairs, sofa and bedside tables. If you want your bed to pop against your light coloured interiors then a handsome carved black four poster is what you need! Chesterfields are a great addition to these classic styled rooms as the brown tufted leather goes beautifully with dark brown stained bed. If you are feeling adventurous then you can even go for ornate metal designs. These designs complement over the top interiors and eclectic styles that comprise of bold colours, patterned wallpapers and eye catching rugs.
Metal beds can be really sleek and minimal.
Go for light, sheer curtains.
With or without Curtains / Canopy : Curtains can surely amp-up your interiors if vintage chic is what you are after. Personally I like fuss free spaces so I prefer my four poster without curtains. White diaphanous curtains add a beautiful, romantic feel to the space. They are also used by a lot of people to prevent mosquito bites. If you like mixing patterns then you can choose complementing patterned curtains for both the room and the bed. The trick here is to stick to a color palette like shades of blue or neutrals to avoid making it look incoherent. Blue tones are soothing and one can never get bored of them. Just remember one important thing, avoid very heavy or bold fabrics as they can ruin the whole look. Keep the fabrics sheer, light and airy with slight texture or subtle patterns to make your space look effortlessly chic.

Bone or Mother of Pearl Inlay : Inlay work on four poster beds looks absolutely stunning! If you don’t want a heavy look then go for inlay on the headboard and avoid the pillars. Mother of pearl inlay beds can make the entire room look like a royal suite. Matching sideboard and nightstands could be a great addition to the interiors. It’s best to stick to neutral colors like grey, black, blue for both bone and mother of pearl inlay so that it’s easy on the eyes.
Hotels : Four poster beds are ideal for hotels with contemporary and classic interiors as they add a lot of charm to the space. Bed design can be chosen according to the theme of the hotel. Simple ones with live edge look great in contemporary setting. Elaborate carving is perfect for classic decoration style. Not many people have four poster beds in their houses so as guests when they come to stay at your hotel it will be a different and memorable experience for them.
